Applications Engineer

Basic Function:  The Applications Engineer will handle customer problems and applications support from a technical and engineering perspective.

Significant Responsibilities:

  • Determine the proper cable for various installation environments required/presented by the customer.
  • Troubleshoot and conduct analysis of problems of apparently defective cables, termination, and splicing issues.
  • Determine the root cause of problems, and recommend and implement improvements.
  • Write reports of findings and corrective action reports for both internal and customer use.
  • Support the Sales Group by conducting customer visits emphasizing installation, handling, termination, cost savings, troubleshooting, and problem analysis.
  • Conduct training sessions for contractors and customer groups.
  • Stays current on all applicable industry standards, specifications, and qualification requirements.
  • Analyzes planning or logistics problems, determines causes, and develops recommended solutions.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with the safety procedures and guidelines set forth by this company.
  • Utilizes and follows quality policy and operating procedures to ensure the quality and consistency of the job being performed.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Management

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience:  Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field and demonstrated experience in a technical field servicing customers or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Essential Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:  Excellent computer skills required with familiarity and skill in software packages such as Visual Cad, Autocad, Microsoft Word and Excel.  Possess an excellent mechanical aptitude with a comprehensive knowledge of fiber optic cable technology and design and its application to production processes such as stranding, extruding, material usage and properties required. Comprehensive knowledge of all applicable industry standards and qualification requirements for fiber optic cable required.  Ability to plan, layout, and execute complex work programs, functions, and operations. Ability to understand and implement quality procedures. Excellent math and handwriting skills required and the ability to correctly complete all paperwork.  Excellent oral and written communication skills required with the demonstrated ability to express oneself clearly and concisely.  Extensive ability to supervise and maintain effective relationships with subordinates.  Ability to work in a team environment with responsibility for training, motivating, monitoring and evaluating others.  Pay close attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments accurately, and to recognize, record, and help resolve problems.  Able to organize, complete tasks and manage time.

 

Working Conditions:  This is a partially sedentary job that requires a sighted individual (i.e., vision corrected to 20/20) for significant computer usage and reading. Also, normal work responsibilities call for nominal levels of physically demanding efforts characterized by walking and standing some of the day and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.  This work also requires an individual with normal hearing (i.e., hearing corrected to normal ranges) to deal with external agencies/vendors, interact with employees, conduct meetings, as well as for significant telephone contact.  The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
